Apple Turnovers

It’s that time of year when the leaves begin to fall and we start to feel a slight chill in the air. Autumn has arrived and time to make the most delicious apple turnovers! As a family, we go apple picking which means I have an abundance of apples in the house, perfect for making this autumnal apple turnover recipe.

These delicious apple turnovers are a breeze to make and are a serious crowd pleasing dessert. When baking these turnovers, your house will be filled with the amazing scent of cinnamon and cooked apples.

Let’s make them the most delicious apple turnovers!

Directions:

  1. Place 1 sheet of puff pastry on a parchment lined baking sheet to thaw before using.
  2. Preheat oven to 400F.
  3. Cut 4 apples into bite size pieces. I used gala apples, however, there are many apples that are wonderful for apple turnovers such as fuji, cortland and Granny Smith.

4. In a large pan melt the butter. Once melted add the apples, brown sugar, pinch of salt and cinnamon, then cook until the apples are just soft.

5. Next, lemon juice and vanilla extract. Take the pan off the heat to rest.

6. Once the puff pastry has thawed, cut it into six squares.

7. Place a heaping spoonful of the apple turnover mixture onto one corner of the puff pastry.

8. Fold the pastry over and pinch the edges with your fingers or use a fork to seal to make your apple turnovers.

9. Pierce the puff pastry to allow for steam to escape during the cooking process.

10. Crack and whisk the egg in a small bowl. Using a pastry brush, brush the tops of the apple turnovers to help with browning in the oven.

11. Bake in the oven @ 400F for 20-25 minutes or until the pastry is cooked through and is golden brown. Finally, if you like, drizzle with caramel sauce and top with vanilla ice cream.

These apple turnovers have a delicious filling baked inside a buttery puff pastry. I like to drizzle them with caramel sauce and a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
